First Women4Tech Summit:
At the 2017 edition of Mobile World Congress, the first Women4Tech Summit took place. This full-day program is designed for women to include them and promote their involvement in technology and mobile. It also provides a platform to learn best practices for women leadership in the digital age from corporate influencers.
As founder of Diversity4Tech.Science and as a woman, it was essential for me to attend
and expercience the first edition of Women4Tech Summit. It was more than interesting, it was fun, inspiring and enlightening!
The program was divided in four key themes, namely:
- Women Empowering Technology---> gender equality and career development.
- Women Encouraging Technology ---> mentoring and youth education.
- Women Transforming Technology ---> focusing on women in communication and vertical sectors.
- Women Innovating in Technology---> women entrepreneurs and innovators.
They took senior-level speakers, both men and mostly women, from around the world to the stage to discuss gender equality in technology work environments and share their strategic advice on how to empower gender diversity in mobile and technology. The goal is to engage and inspire the audience into action! I believe it worked! At least on me, it made me more driven to start own initiatives to inspire and encourage young girls to get involved in technology.
It was really insipiring and awesome to see that many women on stage sharing their stories. Who knew that in Spain alone all the big bosses of big technology companies including IBM, SIEMENS, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, HP are all WOMEN!!! This is incredible and still gives me goosebumps. It is a major step into advancement, now adding more diversity in terms of age, skin color and culture is the next step to go for!
Another fact, who knew that a woman was responsible for the landing of the first man, Neil Armstrong, on the moon. Her name is Katherine G. Johnson and she was one of the few women who worked as engineers for NASA at that time. As a black female mathematician, her coding made the landing possible. This supports my point that you might be suprised by someone´s skills, and it only takes trust and inclusion. Neil made it specifically clear before going to space, that only her calculations he was going to rely on.
Also part of the program was the announcement of women leaders nominees and winners of the ´GLOMO Awards 2017´, which is ´ The Global Mobile Awards´ . One of the winners is ´Mrs Saint-Nwafor´ of ´MTN Nigeria Communications Limited´. She won the category for ´Women4Tech Industry Leadership Award Individual´ for her contribution to technology.
Two women speakers who were also inspiring, were:
- Chelsey Baker ---> She is the founder and CEO of ´National Mentoring Day´ and ´World Mentoring Foundation´. She commits to empower and ecourage young girls and boys to become active members in their communities and the labor market by providing mentoring programs with professionals of different working fields.
- Lorena Boix-Alonso ---> She is the Head of Unit, Converging Media & Content, DG CONNECT, at the European Commission. Her hardworking and drive made it possible to get a high position at one of the biggest international governmental institutions.
Some powerful words and texts were shared at the summit that do make sense when it comes to diversity. Favourites mentioned below:
- For real change, we need leaders who HAVE A VOICE --> those who understand and are part of the Development and Innovation Strategy, who are passionate about driving change, and who have a compelling point of view.
- Gender diversity strengthens professional communities and networks.
- A diverse mix of voices leads to better discussions, decisions and outcomes for everyone. (by Sundar Pichai , the CEO of Google)
